When to Use Emergency Services

Life-threatening emergencies and trauma require an immediate visit to the ED. If you are ever in doubt about whether you or a family member should receive emergency medical care, always be on the side of caution and go immediately to the emergency department. If you have signs of heart attack, stroke or other severe emergencies, immediately call 9-1-1.

Based on recommendation from the American College of Emergency Physicians, you should be treated in an emergency department if you experience:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chest or upper abdominal pain or pressure
  • Fainting, sudden dizziness, weakness
  • Changes in vision
  • Confusion or changes in mental state
  • Any sudden or severe pain
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea
  • Coughing or vomiting blood
  • Suicidal feelings
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Shortness of breath
  • Unusual abdominal pain

In addition, children should be taken to the emergency room if they persistently refuse to eat or drink (especially under age 5) or have persistent fever above 100.4.

Please note: Physicians and Other Allied Health Practitioners treating patients at Hillsboro Health are independent practitioners. They are members of the Hospital’s Medical Staff, but they are NOT employees or agents of the Hospital. Understandably, Hillsboro Health does not control, and is not responsible for, their independent medical treatment decisions. If you have any questions, please see a department manager or contact Risk Management at 217-532-4210.
