Respiratory Therapy Tests and Services

Respiratory Care

Respiratory Care describes all pulmonary services ranging from ventilator management (for people who are unable to effectively breathe on their own) to Oxygen and bronchodilator therapy (for patients with COPD, asthma, and pneumonia). For more information on each of the treatments we administer below, simply click on the text. You are also welcome to call us at 217-532-4175.

Pulmonary Function Test

A Pulmonary Function Test is a series of tests including spirometry, and a diffusion study to determine how well your lungs are working by measuring lung volumes and air flows. Testing can help assess the existence and severity of lung disease and aid your physician in finding the best course of treatment for your lung disease.

Pulse Oximetry

Pulse Oximetry is a test used to measure the oxygen level (Oxygen saturation) of the blood. It is an easy, painless measure of how well Oxygen is being sent to parts of your body furthest from your heart, such as the arms and legs.

Smoking Cessation

Smoking Cessation is the process of discontinuing tobacco smoking. A Respiratory Therapist will discuss with you the harmful effects that smoking has on your body along with providing educational information on how to quit.

Apnea Link

Apnea Link is a compact, lightweight and easy to use home sleep testing device. Apnea Link testing is ordered by your personal physician to determine if you qualify for a Sleep Study.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Phase II & III

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is located within the Respiratory Therapy Department. Hillsboro Health’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program offers Phase II and Phase III Rehab. The goal of the program is to improve the quality of life for those suffering with pulmonary conditions.

Pulmonary Rehab focuses on the individual through monitored exercise to help them improve their endurance levels. Patients will walk away with a better understanding of their condition and how to manage it on a daily basis through energy conservation, breathing techniques, diet and stress management.

Common Diseases Treated With Pulmonary Rehab:
  • COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
  • Pulmonary Fibrosis
  • Asthma
Benefits of Pulmonary Rehab Include:
  • Improvement in exercise tolerance (demonstrated in six min walk distance)
  • Improvement in dyspnea with activity
  • Improvement in muscle strength and endurance
  • Improvement in quality of life
How do I know if I need Pulmonary Rehabilitation?
  • Do you become short of breath when you walk a block?
  • Do you become short of breath when you bend, stoop, or need to carry an object?
  • Does your breathing become difficult when you become anxious?
  • Do you find yourself staying home just because it’s too much effort to get ready to leave the house?
  • Is it important to you to understand your lung condition and how to deal with it?

If you answered yes to two or more of the above questions, joining the Pulmonary Rehab program at Hillsboro Health may be a solution to your breathing problems.

Participants will meet 3 days a week for 12 weeks. A referral from your personal physician is required.
